The
Inter-American Children's Institute (IIN), a Specialized Organization of
the OAS on issues relative to children, adolescents and the family, has
announced the international launch of “ADAM: Learning About My
Rights,” a video game specially designed for teaching about child and
adolescent rights through play. The
Coordinator of the Inter-American Child and Family Information Program
(PIINFA), Ing. Julio Rosenblatt, explained the concept and demonstrated
the software at the XIX Pan American Child Congress, organized in
cooperation with the Mexican government’s National System for the
Integral Development of the Family (DIF). In
the presence of numerous representatives of the national and international
press, José Carlos, a Mexican child belonging to the “Difusores
Infantiles” (Child Promoters) movement, played the video game while the
features and alternatives of this educational product were explained. This
2-D interactive video game leads school-age children, parents and
educators on an adventure, where they move ahead in the game by learning
and acting in favor of the rights enshrined in the 1989 Convention on the
Rights of the Child. The
game will soon be available at all the Focal Centers in the RIIN Network.
It is not authorized for sale, although it may be copied. Due to its size
and the quality of its graphics, the game will be distributed in CD-ROM
format only. The
video game is called “ADAM” in honor of prestigious Polish judge,
researcher and jurist DR. ADAM LOPATKA (1928-2003), who was the
representative of the Polish government to the UN Commission on Human
Rights. Between 1979 and 1989, Lopatka chaired the drafting committee that
prepared the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Thanks to his tireless
work, he is remembered by many as the “father of the Convention.”
The
demonstration of the game was held on Wednesday, October 27 at Mexico’s
Foreign Affairs Secretariat, the venue of the XIX Pan American Child
Congress.
