FIRST INTER-AMERICAN YOUTH ESSAY CONTEST

On the occasion of holding the XIX Pan American Child Congress next October in Mexico City, the Inter-American Children’s Institute (IIN) and the Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral del la Familia del Gobierno de México (Mexican National System for Family Integral Development (DIF), hereby convene all youths in the Americas and the Caribbean to participate in the First Inter-American Youth Essay Contest on the Congress’ central theme: “THE FAMILY:  BASIS FOR THE INTEGRAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS".  

Purpose: to convey to the international community a message on the importance of the Family as the foundation of society. 

Major issues: the essay may deal with the following major issues:

  • “The Family as the Institution with Primary Responsibility for Protection, Upbringing, and Integral Development of the Child”

  • “Evolution of the Child’s Relationship with the Family”

  • “Children’s Rights and Their Relation to the Different Types of Families”

  •  “The Doctrine of Integral Protection and Current Family Law” 

  • “Family Violence and Its Impact on Child Development”

  • “Promoting a Culture of Respect for Children’s Rights:  The Roles of the Family, the State, Civil Society, and the Media”

Contest terms and conditions

  • As this contest is addressed to youth, participants should be between 18 and 25 years old.

  • Participation will be individual and the essay should be original and unpublished.

  • Participants should register in the Web page of the XIX Pan American Child Congress (www.iincpn.oea.org ) by completing the required boxes and thus being assigned a REGISTER NUMBER that should be kept and used when sending the essay.

  • The essay must be typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, double spaced, and have a maximum of 6.000 to 10.000 characters.

Delivery address and deadline

  • Essays should be sent to the e-mail address congresopanamericano@dif.gob.mx, including the previously assigned REGISTER NUMBER in the Subject field.

  • Essays will be received from Monday 5 July through  September 30th,  2004.

Awards

  • Awards will be given to the two best essays on each major issue submitted by youths from the Region (totaling twelve essays), which will add up to awards given to the twelve best essays submitted by Mexican youths.

  • The authors of the best essays will be awarded a fully paid trip to Mexico City, from Saturday 23 October through Saturday 30 October, 2004 in order to participate in the XIX Pan American Child Congress on: THE FAMILY: BASIS FOR THE INTEGRAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS.   This award includes hotel accommodation, meals and air tickets (round trip).

  • The authors of the best essays on each major issue will deliver a presentation to the Working Groups that will meet during the Congress on such issues.

  • The list of winners will be published in the Congress Web page: www.iincpn.oea.org

  • As a form of recognition, all essays will be published in the Congress Web page and in its report.

  • All essays will become part of the Congress documentary records.
